Documents Needed When You Sell Used Car in Sydney
Posted on 13th, May 22
When you sell used Car in Sydney, there are many ways to shoot yourself in the foot, and misplacing documentation is one. You won’t be able to photocopy the car’s registration certificate and present it to the prospective buyer to establish that you are the registered owner if you can’t find it. So, let’s look at all of the documents to sell your car in this blog.
Proof of Ownership And Registration
- The registration certificate indicates that you own the vehicle you’re selling.
- You need to show documentation that you are the owner of the vehicle.
- At the very least, you’ll need to display your driver’s licence or another kind of photo identification (such as a passport) with your name matching the name on the registration certificate.
Form For Transferring Ownership
Although car ownership is transferred online, there are times when a hard-copy notice of disposal is required or preferred. These forms are available at the state registration authority’s local office or can be obtained from the registration authority’s public domain website. It is your job as the seller to notify the registration authority that you are no longer the vehicle owner. You’ll need the new owner’s contact information and dwelling address, not a post office box number, to complete the notice of disposition (or complete the transaction details online). So ask to see the buyer’s driver’s licence and double-check that it’s still valid. You can notify the registration authority the same day the car is turned over to the new owner if you have this information on hand. If you don’t, you could end up battling the loss of demerit points for someone else speeding past speed cameras for up to 14 days after the vehicle no longer belongs to you. Worse yet, you will be required to pay the fines.
Make A Receipt
If a buyer offers you more than $75 for your car, you must provide a receipt to confirm that the buyer has given you the agreed-upon funds to purchase the vehicle. For example, a ‘no-carbon-required’ cash receipt book from one of the big stationery retailers costs less than $10.
- The buyer’s name
- Your name
- The date of the transaction
- The selling price
- The vehicle’s information
Make, model, colour, registration (if applicable), and VIN should all be included in the vehicle’s information (Vehicle Identification Number). You may want to photocopy (or take a phone photograph) the receipt for your records. Although the registration authorities do not need you or the buyer to produce a copy of the permit, the buyer reasonably expects one, especially if the payment is made in cash.
Certificate of Roadworthiness
Keep the RWC somewhere safe, dry, and out of reach of the family dog, but most importantly, somewhere you’ll remember to look when you need it.
Supplements, Owner’s manual, and Service logbook
The owner’s handbook, the service schedule (the ‘logbook,’) and any supplements – such as premium audio systems or other accessories/dealer-fit extras, roadside assistance information, and local-market specs – should all be kept in the glove box. If your owner’s manual and service record become damaged, they can be replaced by purchasing a new one from your local dealer’s spare parts department. If the service information is available, the dealership can also recreate them.
Documentation If The Vehicle Was Recalled.
Few cars are recalled for other safety issues, so be sure the dealer has addressed all outstanding safety issues before listing the car for sale. Also, when it comes time to sell the house, keep all of your documentation handy.
